The new postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, has been instituting widespread changes to the U.S. Postal Service, including cutting overtime and banning postal workers from making extra trips to ensure on-time delivery. Not only do these attacks on the Postal Service have the potential to disenfranchise many Americans amid an anticipated sharp rise in the use of mail-in ballots for the general election, but they will also hurt populations like seniors, rural communities and veterans who rely on the Postal Service for timely delivery of prescription medications and other essentials.

American Postal Workers Union (APWU) President Mark Dimondstein appeared on MSNBC last week to sound the alarm on the attacks against the Postal Service. “Here we are front-line, essential workers in these dangerous and challenging times, proudly still binding the people of this country together. And this is a time when we’re coming under attack, we’re being sabotaged and we’re being undermined,” Dimondstein said. “It’s really shameful.”
